I got Kajeet for my daughter after trying some other traditional plans. They didn’t work because they didn’t have all of the parental controls I need. Kajeet fits our needs since I can block/allow certain numbers to send/receive calls and texts. I can limit the time of day the phone is used as well as how many minutes. There is GPS for safety with email updates. No monthly contract and low monthly plans.

My daughter and I both have Kajeet phones and love them! She’s only 11 and I worried about getting her a phone at that age, but the parental controls that let us control when she can use it, who she can call/text, and who can call/text her made Kajeet an easy choice, and I did lots of research before we decided on it. I use Kajeet myself because of the $14.99 unlimited text and 60 minutes talk plan, which was the best price I’ve found for what I need.

I was looking at your site to get ideas for my kids.

I am looking to switch to T-Mobile and your post in the T-Mobile category is a little inaccurate.

T-Mobile offers for an additional $4.99 (per phone I think) the “Family Allowances” service.

From their website:
“Family Allowances
“Family Allowances lets you set upfront monthly allowances for your kids’ phone usage—minutes, messages, and downloads. It’s easy to set and change limits straight from the Web, and the whole family stays connected, even after allowances are spent.”

You do not get this information on their website until you are in the store checkout process and are able to add services to your family plan.

Travis, Personally I would go with the Kajeet phones because there are a lot to choose from and they are real but with all the parental controls you would ever need. No chance of running up the bill either from my understanding as you can't get charged for more than your plan. The $14.99 plans give your child 60 minutes and unlimited texts. You might look into Kajeet before you make a decision.

My son has been begging for a cellphone for ever and he is ony 9 years old. I searched the web and the different plans, prepaids and models. Even thought I the cool phones like that Tic Talk, my son won’t go for that, he wants a ‘real’ cellphone. I’m in a really hard place now, because I need to be sure to have him in a pay as you go. I really can’t afford to have any surprises or huge bills. I Thought about tracfone or net10 and you make a great point about tracfone, no contracts sounds good. Can you recomend a ‘cool’ equipment for a nine year old?

And are they all asking! Seems like mine have all jumped on the bandwagon and all 3 are wanting one…my eldest an upgrade, and the other two their first phones.
One you don’t make mention of here is Net10. My oldest son’s been using Net10 for about 18months now, and I have to say we are duly impressed with their coverage and low monthly rate. The c/minute has come down a bit more…he now gets 200 minutes for the $15 it costs us. I’ve been doing a bit of research to see what will suit us best to have all 3 boys with cellphones, and I actually think we will be staying with Net10. The oldest can move up to a better plan…perhaps the $25, 750 minute one and the other two onto the $15. With me using the unlimited plan at $50, it means the 4 of us will all be connected for just over $100, with the appropriate amount of minutes each. Really a varied selection of both minutes and handsets, without breaking the bank!

I agree with you Rachel, my kids were diving me crazy to get them cell phons…”all my friends have one” if only I get a penny for everytime I hear that! I was worried I’d be stuck with huge bills until I discoved Tracfone, now not only they are happy, but also they learn to control their expenses. And they are very good about it, they don’t spend more than 25 a month and their phones were cheap too. I’m a happy Tracfone customer and so are them!

These days kids having cell phones is ever so popular. I got my child a cell phone to ease my mind and know that I can get a hold of him when needed. I went with Tracfone and got a great phone for $20.00. His service averages less than $7 a month when I buy a $20 airtime card, which provides 60 minutes of airtime and three months of service. His Tracfone has given me the safety and security of a wireless phone without the problems of a contract and monthly fees.
